How to approach it

Three useful clues

01

Intakes

Look beneath and beside the cockpit. A single chin intake, paired side intakes and diverterless inlets quickly narrow the fighter family.

02

Wings and tail

Delta wings, conventional swept wings and twin vertical fins remain readable even when paint and national markings are hidden.

03

Fighter or transport

Heavy transports use a high wing, large cargo fuselage and rear loading ramp. Fighters are compact, highly swept and built around speed and manoeuvrability.
